THE INITIATIVE

  • More than just a conference, AUBxStanford WiDS is a partnership with the Stanford Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering led by AUB for the Arab MENA region.

GUIDE. INSPIRE. EDUCATE.

  • The AUBxStanford Women in Data Science (WiDS) Initiative aims to inspire and educate data scientists, regardless of gender, and support Arab women in the field. This one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science research in different fields, learn how leading-edge companies are leveraging data science for success, and connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and others in the field. The event is directed towards business practitioners, researchers, students

Dr. Monica Lam has been a Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University since 1988. She is the Faculty Director of the Stanford MobiSocial Computing Laboratory.  Her research spans the areas of architecture, compilers, distributed systems, machine learning, and human-computer interfaces.  Her current research is to develop an open end-user programmable virtual assistant platform that protects users' privacy.  She received a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1987.   Prof. Lam is an ACM Fellow, and a co-author of the "dragon book", the most popular textbook in compilers.

Kris Gunsalus obtained her BA in Chemistry and Biology and her PhD in Developmental Genetics from Cornell University. Dr. Gunsalus performs research in functional genomics and maintains research groups in New York and Abu Dhabi. Her research in New York focuses on early development in the simple animal model C. elegans. In Abu Dhabi, her lab is undertaking a new program in chemical genetics and natural products discovery. She is the Co-Director of the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and also serves as Faculty Director of Bioinformatics for NYU Abu Dhabi.

Mariette Awad is an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the American University of Beirut. She received her PhD in electrical engineering in 2007 and she has been a visiting professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Intel Mobile Group, and MIT. Dr. Awad was invited by CVC labs, Google and Qualcomm to present her work on machine learning and image processing. She has published the book “Efficient Machine Learning” in 2015, and has taken part in numerous conferences and as well as managing several grants. She is an active member in IEEE and reviewer for IEEE transactions

Rita graduated from AUB in 2015 with a bachelor in Civil and Environmental Engineering. During her years at AUB she developed a passion for applied mathematics and innovation, and became curious about the various techniques that can be used to strategically solve business problems. As such, Rita decided to pursue a Masters in Operations Research at Columbia University where she became more and more familiar with stochastic modeling, business analytics and Big Data. Determined to apply her knowledge in the financial industry, she joined the Wholesale Credit Analytics and Solutions group at JPMorgan NY where she focuses on using her analytical skills to get business insights and optimize risk models from the huge credit data available at JPMorgan.

Ms. Jacqueline Barrett

Jacqueline Barrett is the Lead Researcher of the Economic Graph team at LinkedIn. In her role, she uses LinkedIn's rich data set to uncover trends in local economies as well as understand complex labor market phenomena. Prior to working at LinkedIn, Jacqueline served as an Economist at Compass Lexecon where she specialized in antitrust and competition. She also has research experience at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago where she focused on financial forecasting as well as housing markets. She has an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a BA in Economics from Northwestern University.

Sara graduated from Bristol University with a degree in Statistics and trained in Econometrics at the LSE. She spent 15 years working as an Econometrician helping clients such as VW, Diageo and Ikea to evaluate and optimise their marketing investments. In 2013, she started using her analytical skills in the field of HR Analytics, to help organisations understand the behaviour of their employees and the on-going impact on company profitability. The key to her career success has been in translating statistical findings into easy to understand insights, with actionable recommendations, that help to create efficiencies within an organisation.

Dr. Viviane Tabar
Chairwoman Theresa C Feng Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York

Viviane Tabar, MD is the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Theresa C feng Chair in Neuro-Oncology  at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She is a neurosurgeon with expertise in glioma and endoscopic skull base surgery, as well as a scientist with expertise in stem cell biology. She received her MD from the American University of Beirut and her postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health. Her lab work is focused on harnessing the regenerative potential of human stem cells towards repairing the brain. She is co-PI of the NYSTEM consortium for cell-based therapy for Parkinson’s disease, and has recently extended her cell therapy work to include repair of radiation injury to the brain.  She has also developed the first human ES cell based model of brain tumors leading to the discovery of a novel target pathway and a potential new therapy. Dr Tabar was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine. She has received several awards from the New York Academy of Medicine and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and was elected to the membership of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Rania Khalaf

Rania Khalaf is the Director of Engineering at IBM Research AI where she leads teams pushing the envelope in AI platforms to make creating AI models and applications delightful for data scientists and developers. This requires solving key problems at the intersection of core AI, distributed systems, human computer interaction and cloud computing. Prior to this role, Rania was director of Cloud Platform, Programming Models and Runtimes working on projects including Apache OpenWhisk, Swift@IBM, API Harmony and Istio. Before that, Rania’s research and open standards work provided seminal advances in the  the field of Service Oriented Computing and Web Services including being an editor of the WS-BPEL standard for web services composition and contributing to IBM products. Rania was a cloud architect in IBM GTS and chief of staff to the GM and CTO of IBM Cloud.  Her research papers have over 5k citations; she is the recipient of awards such as Extraordinary and Outstanding IBM Research accomplishments. Rania is a recurrent invited speaker and panelist, and serves on the program committees of over 20 workshops and conferences and as guest editor of journals in this space. Rania has lived in 8 countries, spent a summer teaching kids Computer Science in India and holds a PhD with honors from U. Stuttgart and Masters and Bachelors in EECS from MIT. 
Dr. Lale Akarun

Lale Akarun received the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic School of Engineering of NYU, in 1992. She has been a faculty member of Bogazici University, Istanbul since 1993. She has served as a faculty member in the Electrical-Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering Departments. She became a full professor of Computer Engineering in 2002. She has served as Department Head of Computer Engineering (2010-2012) and Vice Rector for Research (2012-2016). As Vice Rector, her responsibilities included Sponsored Research Projects, Technology Transfer, Incubation Centers and Technoparks of the University. Her research areas are image processing, computer vision and computer graphics. She has supervised 50 graduate theses and published more than 200 scholarly papers in scientific journals and refereed conferences. She has conducted research projects in biometrics, face recognition, hand gesture recognition, human-computer interaction, and sign language recognition.

Dr. Rahma Beaugrand

Dr. Rahma is a PhD in Finance from Paris Dauphine University and has an Executive Global MBA from London Business School and Columbia Business School in New York. She’s French and speaks fluently Arabic, Italian, French and English. Rahma has more than 18 years’ experience in Management and IT consulting, with an important expertise in SAP products acquired during different international Core Model and programs roll out. During the last 8 years, she was founder and managing director of a boutique consulting firm based in Europe, managing more than 18 consultants’ and several Global Accounts. Dr. Rahma manage several strategic and Innovative projects dealing with blockhead in different industries, IoT, Machine learning Virtual reality and Improving Customer Experience. Currently Dr. Rahma is leading strategic initiatives for UAE and Oman market unit, helping to build strategic partnership and developing new business models and innovative digital platform and solutions with SAP partners and customers. She is involved on several exciting topics dealing with Digital transformation, Innovation and co-innovation in public and private sector, IoT, smart cities, new communication platform, blockchain and its implication in different industries and in Public sector, and redefining customer experience for better engagement with brands values. Dr. Rahma BEAUGRAND is also leading London Business School Women in Business Gulf association with an aim of building a support network to offer advice and guidance to entrepreneurs and women. Dr. Rahma is an innovation passionate. In her free time, she is working on helping entrepreneurs and startups to design their Go to Market strategy and new Business Models.

Dr. Fatima Abu Salem

American University of Beirut

Dr. Abu Salem holds a DPhil in Computing from the University of Oxford. She is Associate Professor at the computer science department and is currently pursuing work in reference to data science and big data processing for the public good, most notably, in detecting fake news around the Syrian conflict, predicting demand on primary health care centers in Lebanon, and analyzing the resilience of the Lebanese power grid in the face of attacks or failures. Her main research interests are interdisciplinary, focusing on parallel and cache efficient algorithm engineering with applications in Computer Algebra, and is currently pursuing work in reference to big data distributed processing using Apache Spark. She has served on a number of professional positions related to Supercomputing, such as secretary of SIAM’s activity group on Supercomputing, as well as on the committees of related conferences. She is also associate editor for Elsevier's Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.

Marie Wallace is an Analytics Strategist and Solution Architect for IBM having spent more than a decade building analytics technologies which today underpin such solutions as IBM Watson. In recent years Marie's primary focus has been on the analysis of human data to deliver smarter, personalized and contextualized solutions for individuals and organizations. Marie is a globally recognized thought leader, with an active social media presence and popular blog, AllThingsAnalytics.com.

Tania has a background in Finance and Psychotherapy with 12 years of international experience in FMCG. She completed her Masters in Business Analytics and Big Data in IE (Madrid) on July 2017 pursuing a career change where she could leverage her advanced analytical skills and business experience with new technical knowledge developed through the Masters. She is now responsible of the new Big Data Department at IE, where data driven strategies are been developed to find innovative solutions on the education field such as projects related with machine learning, Robotics and Business intelligence. Big Data for Social Good evangelist, passionate about the human side of Big Data as people´s lives could benefit and be transformed in a positive way.

Dr. Nada Abumurad

Dr. Abumrad is currently Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis Missouri and holds the Robert Atkins endowed Professorship of Medicine and Obesity Research.  She serves as Associate Director of the Nutrition and Obesity research Center (NORC) and as Director of the NORC Adipocyte Biology and Molecular Nutrition Core.  She is recognized for her work on cellular fatty acid uptake and the role it plays in metabolic regulation and the etiology of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  Her recent work in humans demonstrated that genetic variants in a fatty acid transporter she identified contribute to individual differences in fat taste, in the lipid profile and susceptibility to obesity-associated complications.
